Over recent years the use of the 'Saturday standout' service has declined significantly as more residents are recycling and composting at home, also making more use of the alternatives available to them. As part of the continuous cycle of improvements, and to ensure value for money we have reviewed the Saturday standouts collection service, and can find little justification for continuing this service. We have therefore made the decision to end the 'Saturday standout' collection service. This is based on the following key findings: - Very little material was actually collected
- The service was used by less than 1,000 people in 2009 and was not universally available throughout the Borough.
- The collection cost per tonne of material collected was considerably higher compared to the average costs for all other collections.
- More suitable and convenient alternatives now exist for all materials that have in the past been collected on the standout vehicles.
Chelmsford Borough Council now provides a comprehensive all year round kerbside collection service of materials for recycling and composting. Alongside these collections we also offer residents in the Borough a special collection service for the larger unwanted items such as furniture and electrical items. This service can be booked as and when required and although it generally attracts a charge, most items are free to OAPs and residents in receipt of benefits. Materials can also be taken to the Recycling Centres for Household Waste.
