Heritage Weekend: Essex at War
ESSEX AT WAR, 1914 - 1918
Sunday 14 September 10am – 5pm
A joint event between Hylands House & Essex Records Office exploring the impact of the Great War on Essex, this in conjunction with Heritage Open Days.
Join us in remembrance and take part in the many activities taking place throughout the day.
A series of short talks covering various ways in which Essex was affected by the First World
War, re-enactment groups, First World War recruitment tent, Essex Yeomanry Band, the launch of ‘The Last Poppy’ exhibition and the ‘Chelmsford Remembers’ appeal. Essex Regiment are on hand to help identify cap badges and old military photos, exhibition on Hylands military hospital and those that lived and worked on the Estate; as well as a replication of ‘The People’s Fete’ with our refreshment tent on the back lawn selling tea, coffee and cakes.
All donations welcome, money raised will go to Help for Heroes. Hawthorn Heavy Horses will be providing carriage rides as well as telling the story of the Suffolk Punch and its role during the First World War.
Chelmsford War Memorial, Marconi Heritage Group, Western Front Association and many more groups will also be present.

Browse our exhibition in the East Wing on Hylands Military Hospital, exploring the stories of those working and living on Hylands Estate who served their country in the Great War, and join 'The People's Fete'.
